The greater our faith – The greater our endowment of hope

"The greater our faith becomes, the greater our endowment of hope. Hope is also a gift of the Spirit. Faith precedes hope, which comes as a natural result of faith.

Moroni begins his powerful teaching on hope by reminding us of the promise of God by quoting the prophet Ether.

Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, which hope cometh of faith, maketh an anchor to the souls of men, which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God. (Ether 12:4)

Moroni is telling us that anyone who has faith in God "might with surety" hope for exaltation. The term "might" means it is possible, or at some point will occur. The term "with surety" means this knowledge is revealed. A non-revealed feeling of hope would be the byproduct of logic. We know we are keeping the commandments, and generally feel good about ourselves. In this light, we hope we are acceptable unto God, and hope for a place in the kingdom of God.

John Pontius, "Following the Light of Christ into His Presence", p.112
